Nigeria got her independence from Britain on October 1, 1960.
As it is usually the case with getting independence everywhere, the day was well celebrated. It was a very memorable one that witnessed a lot of happy moments from fireworks to dance troupes, masquerades, even a state banquet where dignitaries mingled and danced.
The independence day was topped by a grand ceremony hosted by Nigeria’s first prime minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe was the governor-general, a role he shared with Sir James Wilson Robertson. Queen Elizabeth II, who was still Nigeria’s sovereign. She was represented by a member of the British royal family, Princess Alexandra.
Here are some images from the archives to relive the independence day event that took place some 59 years back.
